Berkeley once had 20,000 college lectures available on their website. Anyone could watch for free. But then government said the videos were illegal because they didn’t have captions for the deaf.

Captioning 20,000 videos would cost millions. So instead, Berkeley just took down all the videos. That meant nobody outside the college would be able to see them.

But one person didn’t let that happen.

Jeremey Kaufmann just started a new service called LBRY (pronounced “library”). He posted the Berkely videos and thousands of others.

LBRY is kind of like Youtube–but unlike Youtube, it can’t be censored.

Kaufmann says he isn’t afraid to host the videos on his operation, because unlike Berkeley, he didn’t create them. He says that means he’s not legally responsible. We’ll see. One never knows what our authoritarian government will do.

Three cheers for entrepreneurs like Kaufmann who risk their time and money to keep information like these college lectures available.

Why don’t libertarians wave their free market magic wands and bring down the cost of captioning? It’s already happening with voice-recognition software…

so if you are faced with an ineffective affirmative action hire professor for scientific calculus you SHOULDN’T have the exceptional free lecture series available from MIT? The only other alternative is an expensive and time consuming private tutor. This effectively locks out those of limited means and/or time because you choose to have a job to help pay for college.

I wonder if government backed student loans were part of the reason. I mean, seriously, someone proactively brought a threat to a public university. I have a hard time believing it was for anyone’s benefit.

I want equal opportunity for everyone, but equality can go too far, to the point of disadvantaging people who could otherwise have had it better. This is a perfect example of such. Some things could cost absurd amounts of money to be made equally available to those whom are disadvantaged. If an individual, governmental or corporate entity, cannot afford to make something equally available to everyone, they should not be punished for their lack of disposable income. However, educational institutions should in some sense be required to make educational material available for everyone, but the government needs to be able to realize that financial limitations sometimes will prohibit this, and thus the state should not prohibit the advancement of society on the basis that a minority won’t be able to take advantage of it at this instance. The disadvantaged would have gotten the ability to access it at a later time, when financial and technological restraints might have changed.

Government kills everything except itself, which proves it is heavily biased and not really fit to rule. So why the huge salaries? It’s called theft, but when they legalize it for themselves only or mostly themselves it’s called Babylonian Talmudic Zionism. It’s also known as SELF-DEIFICATION which is a predominate practice of Hinduism. It’s official seal is the Star of David, which is also the Star of Rephaim (remaining living relatives of the Fallen Angels). Jews who say they are Jews but are not and are LIARS. There is not nor ever has been a Star of David. Not in the Heavens which all are named. It only exists in the IMAGINATION of the deceived. Image Jinn Nation= Imagination. The prince of Persia is not the Prince of Peace. This is why whenever they (self-deified) promise peace, they bring destruction instead. Now you know why Christianity is illegal in India, but only occaisionally enforced. Same principal that M. Night Shamalayonmeplease gets final cut, but never uses it. It’s because he will one day with no one to stop him because he never used it before so no one will see it coming (he is D’one Mesh Da Soozah with a 4K camera). Same principal of a parent having a loaded weapon they never intend to use, then a curious toddler shoots itself. Who is at fault?

I hope that God just wanted that infant and doesn’t really care what anybody or anything thinks about it. Now that is something worth meeting on His terms and in His time!

The rest of it is worldly Bullshit and all the Nag Champra in the world won’t cover the stench of Brahmas bullshit. Cleopatra wasn’t the most beautiful woman in all of Egypt. She was a sexual “Nadia Kolmaneech” that hid the stench in her crotch with cinnamon oil and hypnotic beautification of the eyelids. Most are easily distracted by anyone who knows how to book a rod (whether it be a rod of flesh or iron). And this is true in every language!

And if you have read this far, then you know I have a subscription to Reason Magazine and are giggling happily because this read is not a complete waste of your time. Those who have read this far and are angry pissed off and incensed with rage towards me or think me an anti Semite racist bigoted Hindu hater, then you are either an A.I. troll or an utterly hopeless douchebag who thinks the “Subtle Art Of Not Giving A Fuck” is the bible for enlightened millenials. I still thank you for reading.

    To government and officials:
!! And yes you can quote me in this comment section addressed directly to you!!

And finally, to the stasi-narc neighborhood spy… Your MKULTRA ulterior motives are more pathetic than what I have thus far survived and I truly hope you have learned something useful for your useless life because you’re next and you’re gonna need all the help you can get and it still won’t be enough! Hopefully you can consider this while there’s still time to stop. I do hope for the latter for you as this comment is more than enough help!

Isn’t every business violating this law in some way? Every drive through needs someone out there that knows sign language taking orders for deaf people. Every store that plays music needs to provided the hearing impaired with a hearing aid. Every website, newspaper, and magazine needs to have an audible version for deaf people. Every movie, video, and tv show needs to have closed captions. Every zoo needs someone there to describe what the animals look like and what they’re doing for blind people. I can’t believe stupid laws like this even exist.

I think the comments on this thread speak volumes to the fact that this era needs more teachers, universities, libraries, videos, books, puppet shows, or whatever is necessary to keep the flea like attention span of the social media generation. Stop trolling and start helping or at least educate yourself so you do not sound as uneducated or inane as the President or his posse of supporters.

When a space available to become a library in an area where is great need for it, but it;s on the second floor location of a building and since it is NOT wheel chair accessible uncle Sam says NO you can not open. There are millions of similar situations. Also the worst is when they stop new technology based on patents…that are similar to big-corp patents so they investigate it for couple years…..etc.

Dude, wtf are these PragerU ads. Whatever you believe about Israel, it’s an actual complex issue – this ad is straight up propaganda for one side that makes me feel gross. If I’m gonna be fed this kind of thing every time I watch a Reason video from now on I’m out.

When are reasonable people going to shrug off the federal government and just stop listening to them and doing what they want us to do? I know – rhetorical question. Maybe the question should be when are we going to have education facilities that are ONLY supported by the patrons of that school… take the Fed Govt’s money out of the equation so people can actually decide on how to educate themselves. Jeremy Kaufman is doing exactly this… support his business.

The government wants to keep the public uneducated, instead of stepping in and paying for the caption so that the deaf can also watch the video, instead, they rather deny everyone else high quality content. Man fuck the government, there’s nothing more threatening to them than a informed educated public, because if people were indeed smart they will realize they can do things for themselves and not be depended on the government shit for them.

What about deaf people who can’t read? Shouldn’t sign language be mandatory? What about those who can’t sign? Shouldn’t a constant view of the speaker’s lips be required? What if they also can’t read lips but can understand their mother because over years they developed a language only Mom and the deaf person can understand? Shouldn’t every video have that dude’s mom translating the course into their personal non-verbal language? What if a person has a disability that makes education videos cause excruciating lower lumbar pain? Shouldn’t it be required that the video contain a warning about the possibility of excruciating lower lumbar pain? What if the sufferer of Educational Video Induced Excruciating Lower Lumbar Pain (EVIELLP) can’t read the warning?

It’s literally the internet. There’s so many hundreds of thousands of people that would love to have free access to that in exchange for writing subtitles in a crowd-sourced kind of way.

Just like Duolingo or Wikipedia is free.

My God….the federal government is doing it’s level best to ruin this country. I’d bet dollars to donuts whatever government shit stain was involved in this voted for Hillary.

The abuse in the area of “disabled” people is immense. How many of these people drawing a check for disability are doing so because they don’t want to work? I’ve met more than a few that were plenty capable of working buy they would rather sit on their ass and draw a check. People that are actually disabled don’t want to be treated any different. That’s the difference between the two-one wishes they didn’t have the disablilty and doesn’t want to talk about it and the other makes it a point to make sure everyone around them realizes how disabled they are.

Still the Government has achieved its aim here. Those vids are not on YouTube anymore. Most people will not know to go to LBRY to get them, and so they are in effect unavailable to the majority. The likes of Obama want you to go to Uni so that you are in debt for the rest of your life and thus can be controlled more easily should the need arise, and you come under the influence of the Left wing bias that pervades education.
