Oprah Winfrey continues to prove that supreme elevation has no age limit. The billionaire media mogul, philanthropist, and actress has continued to break records throughout her career and offers all power women a blueprint for pushing boundaries and living your most golden life. Her media mojo, tenacity, and power woman receipts have even prompted fans and supporters to push for a presidential run after her rousing speech at this year’s Golden Globes, a win of which would make her the first African American female in the seat. (Sorry folks, that notion will remain a fan fantasy since she recently said it’s “not something that interests me.“)
The Super Soul Sunday maven still continues to win in more ways than one. As she celebrated her 64th birthday on Monday, let’s take a look at her most recent boss moves that prove she’s still got it.
1. Her South Africa school for girls is still going strong.
Last April, the Leadership Academy for Girls celebrated 10 years serving hundreds of students from underserved communities in grades 8-12 and prepping them for careers in fields including public service, medicine, and architecture. Winfrey told Variety that she spent about $140 million to maintain the school and that she foots the bill for uniforms, clothing and even emergency medical services for girls whose families can’t afford the costs. Many of the girls graduate and move on to top universities such as Stanford, Skidmore, Brown, Oxford, USC, University of Cape Town and Varsity College.
2. She continues forging lucrative partnerships that incorporate reinvention.
Winfrey purchased 10% of Weight Watcher shares in October 2015 for $43 million and paid $6.79 a share. She also became a spokesperson. According to reports, she pretty much hit gold by buying when she did because early this month the shares shot up to more than 8 times what she paid for them to a whopping total of $365 million.
3. Her magazine—with her as the one and only cover girl—is still killing the circulation game.
Despite a challenging market for print media, O, The Oprah Magazine has a circulation of 2.4 million, most of which are paid subscriptions, according to figures reported by the publication. These circulation numbers put the pub among the top 50 magazines in the world, along with other heavy-hitters including Time, Cosmopolitan, and Maxim.
4. She’s still acting, producing—or wearing both hats—in award-winning and award-nominated productions.
From Queen Sugar to Greenleaf, to a master class bearing her name, she’s mastered the art of the career pivot. All have either won or been nominated for awards including Emmys and NAACP Image Awards. And since playing the unforgettably bold and resilient Sophia in Oscar-winning film The Color Purple, she has blazed a trail in engaging power woman roles including Deborah Lacks, a descendant of Henrietta Lacks; Annie Lee Cooper, a determined activist in Selma, and Gloria Gaines, and the feisty matriarch in Lee Daniel’s The Butler. This March she expands her range with the role of Mrs. Which in Disney’s family fantasy film A Wrinkle In Time.
5. She pays it forward beyond cold cash—supporting the talents and projects of others.
Many know the stories of Dr. Phil and Iyanla Vanzant, who, after aligning with Winfrey, found tremendous success in TV and book sales. She has also supported the works and talents of Tyler Perry, Hollywood producer and minister DeVon Franklin, Lee Daniels, and many more—helping to push the bar on diversity in Hollywood and telling often overlooked stories for the masses.
